Frequently Asked Questions
SmartScripts is an entirely new way of managing daily medications. As a result, we tend to get asked many of the same questions from patients about how our Regimen Management process works. Some of those frequently asked questions are below. If you can’t find the answer here, please call 1-844-59-SMART (1-844-597-6278) and a SmartScripts representative will be happy to assist you.
Most Frequently Asked
Is there an additional cost for this service?
There is no additional charge for SmartScripts beyond your typical co-pays and the cost of any over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements that you choose to add to your medication strip (SmartStrip). Shipping, handling, or any other extra fees do not exist with SmartScripts.
Do my copays remain the same?
Your co-pays will most likely stay the same. However, because co-pays are determined by your insurance provider based on factors such as types of medications and deductibles, we recommend you call your insurance provider directly for an accurate quote for your regimen of medications. Keep in mind, we bill your insurance company every 30 days for your medications. When you call your insurance provider, be sure to specify your pharmacy as SmartScripts, a pharmacy in Washington, IA, and let them know you will be on a 30-day cycle.
Is SmartScripts covered by insurance?
SmartScripts accepts most major insurance plans, including most Medicare Part D plans and Medicaid. Please contact us with any questions or to verify your insurance compatibility with SmartScripts.
How do I pay for this service?
It is easiest to pay by credit card or ACH. We will bill your chosen payment method after the medication is filled for co-pays and the cost of any over-the-counter, non-prescription medications you have requested. A receipt will be included with your medications. If automatic payment is not an option for you, please call us to discuss other options.
What if I need something other than pills?
SmartScripts operates just like your neighborhood pharmacy and can provide you with ointments, creams, liquids, inhalers, nebulizers, diabetes testing equipment, and anything else you may require. These items will be packaged alongside your medication strip.
Can non-prescription items be added to my SmartScripts?
Of course. Your daily vitamins, minerals, and supplements can be packaged with your prescriptions.
How often will I receive a strip of medication?
You will receive a new strip of medications every 30 days, approximately two to three days prior to the new strip’s start date.
You will receive your first SmartScripts medication strip, along with any items that do not fit in your strip like inhalers and creams, approximately 3-5 days prior to your start date as discussed and agreed upon during your sign up. You will then receive refills of your medications every 30 days.
What if my medications change?
We know that medications can change at any time. We will send you a Physician’s Guide to SmartScripts which will advise your physician what to do in the event a new prescription or change in dose is required. If the change is needed immediately, we can provide you with enough of the medication to get you through to your next SmartScripts refill. If the change is non-emergent, we can wait and start your new dose or medication in your next strip to avoid confusion.
What do you do about medications I take sometimes but not every day?
Any medication that you take on an as-needed basis will be dispensed in a standard prescription bottle rather than your SmartStrip. However, if you find yourself taking an as-needed medication on a regular basis, our pharmacists will be happy to help you decide if a new prescription from your physician with scheduled directions is right for you.
Do I need to get all new prescriptions?
Absolutely not. After your initial consultation, your Personal Regimen Management Technician will contact your previous pharmacy, transfer all of your prescriptions, and contact your physician if and when refills are needed for any of your medications. At SmartScripts, we take care of everything and bring the pharmacy to you so you don’t have to spend time worrying about your medication regimen.
What if I need a medication immediately?
If you need an immediate medication such as an antibiotic, we can ship overnight, but we recommend filling that prescription at your local retail pharmacy so you can begin taking your medication right away. If it is a medication you continue to plan on taking, we would be more than happy to add it to your next strip. If you have any questions or are uncertain about the urgency of starting a new medication, please call us at 1-844-597-6278 and we will help explore your options.
Enrollment and Getting Started
What happens if/when I get a new prescription?
Your physician can send your new prescription directly to SmartScripts. If your new medication is to be started immediately, we will provide a standard pill bottle with enough of the medication to get you through to your next 30-day cycle. At that point, the new med will be packaged with all of your other medications and supplements in one, convenient strip. If the new prescription is not to be started right away, we can wait until your next SmartStrip is packaged to avoid confusion.
What happens in the event of a dose change?
We’re aware that medications can change at any time. In the event of a dose change for one of your regular medications, we can send an interim supply to get you through to your next refill. We will package the new dose in your next SmartStrip and remove the old one. However, if one of your medications requires frequent dose changes, we may package that medication separately in a standard pill bottle with specific instructions. This allows you to change your dosing of that particular medication without having to worry about changing the rest of your SmartStrip.
Can you add vitamins and supplements to my SmartStrip?
Absolutely. Any vitamins, minerals, or supplements you would like can be packaged with your prescriptions.
When are SmartScrips pharmacists available for consultation?
SmartScripts pharmacists are available from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week and can be reached at 1-844-597-6278.
What is Regimen Management and how does it work?
Regimen Management is a new solution to a decades-old problem: taking the right pills at the right time. We package your daily prescriptions, vitamins, and supplements into individual pouches that are then combined on a single roll called a SmartStrip. Each pouch is marked with a date and time so all you need to do is tear off the pouch at the designated time, rip it open, and take your medications.
What if I have prescriptions from multiple doctors?
We will contact each of your doctors and get all pertinent information regarding your prescriptions and refills. We will make every effort necessary to sync all of your medications regardless of prescriber.
How do you get in contact with my doctor(s)?
We use a combination of faxes, phones calls, and e-scribing to get in contact with your doctor(s).
What do I have to do to make sure I get refills on time?
Most of the time, you don’t have to do a thing. We collaborate with your prescriber(s) and insurance to be sure you have sufficient refills well before your SmartStrips are packaged. If there is ever any additional action required of you by your prescriber or insurance, such as a visit to the doctor’s office, we will be sure to communicate that action with you in a clear and timely manner.
Are you able to send insulin and other diabetes testing equipment, such as test strips and needles?
Absolutely. We work with you to get your insulin, needles, and other diabetes testing equipment to you in a safe and controlled manner as quickly and efficiently as possible. Please note that while we can bill many insurance providers for test strips, unfortunately we cannot do this for Medicare Part B patients.
What should I do if I forget to take one of my SmartStrip pouches?
We know day-to-day life can be hectic and forgetting to take your medications is going to happen. Fear not. If it’s close to the time you would normally take your medications, go ahead and take them a little bit late. However, if it’s closer to the time of your next dose, skip the pouch and resume as normal with your next dose. Some prescriptions and medications have specific instructions in regards to time so if you ever have any questions about your particular set of meds, call a SmartScripts pharmacist at 1-844-597-6278 and they will walk you through your unique situation.
How is my SmartStrip prepared?
Your prescription information is entered by one of our certified pharmacy technicians and double checked by a pharmacist for accuracy and interactions prior to packaging. We then utilize a highly sophisticated, automated dispensing system to sort and fill each pouch in your SmartStrip. Your strip is tracked through each step of the process using a combination of barcodes and other technology that is monitored by a pharmacist to ensure you get the correct medications each and every time.
How do you check the strips before they’re sent out?
Each strip is sent through an image recognition system that confirms each medication is in the right pouch. All medications are checked against a drug database and verified based on color, density, shape, and size. An image of each pouch is recorded in the system and a pharmacist checks each strip for accuracy before it is packaged for pickup or delivery.
What do I do if a pouch has an error?
You should never receive a strip with an error. However, in the event that we are responsible for a mistake in your SmartStrip we will send you a corrected replacement via overnight shipment at no cost.
What should I do if my strip has been tampered with?
If I want to speak to a pharmacist, what’s the best way to get a hold of one?
The quickest way to get in contact with a pharmacist is to call SmartScripts pharmacy directly at 1-844-597-6278. You can also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Insurance and Billing

When speaking with your representative, be sure to specify that you would like to fill your prescriptions with SmartScripts, a pharmacy in Washington, IA.
How do you get my insurance information?
Upon sign up, we gather some identifying information from you along with the contact information for your current pharmacy. If you decide SmartScripts is right for you, we will call your previous pharmacy and transfer your prescriptions to us. In some cases, we can transfer your insurance information along with your prescriptions. However, it is most convenient to gather your insurance information from your actual insurance card during the signup process. This ensures we get the correct and current insurance information for you, prevents complications in the filling and billing processes, and helps us make sure you get your medications on time.
How much does SmartScripts cost?
There is no cost to you beyond your typical 30-day copays and the cost of any over-the-counter medications you choose to include with your SmartScripts order. Packaging, shipping, handling, or delivery fees do not exist with SmartScripts.
How do you bill?
How much do vitamins, supplements, and other over-the-counter medications from SmartScripts cost?
SmartScripts gets over-the-counter medications from similar suppliers as your local retail pharmacy. We follow pricing guidelines from these suppliers so vitamins, minerals, supplements, and other over-the-counter medications from SmartScripts will have prices that are very similar to those you would find at any other retail pharmacy.
Do you dispense brand medications, generic, or both?
SmartScripts pharmacy can dispense either brand or generic medications based on how your prescriptions are written.

What should I do if I go on vacation?
Do you provide emergency or overnight shipments?
We do have the capability to send emergency and overnight shipments. However, in the event that a medication needs to be taken right away, such as an antibiotic, we suggest filling that prescription at your local retail pharmacy. If you have questions regarding the urgency of starting a medication, call us at 1-844-597-6278 and a pharmacist will help you determine the best course of action.
Where is SmartScripts located?
SmartScripts pharmacy is located in Washington, IA at 1010 W Madison Street. We also have several satellite locations spread throughout central Iowa.
Are SmartScripts products child safe?
SmartScripts medication strips are not child safe. Please be sure to keep your medications out of the reach of children at all times.
How do you collect my personal and prescription information?
Most of the information we gather comes directly from you during your initial consultation and signup. After the signup process, we contact your previous pharmacy to gather prescription information including the names, strengths, and quantities of your medications, dosing instructions, refills, prescriber(s), and other pertinent information to ensure you get started on the SmartScripts regimen management system at a time that’s convenient for you. Further information related to your prescriptions may be gathered from your doctor(s) when it comes times to obtain refills for your medications.
How do you use that information and is it safe?
We only use your personal and prescription information to provide you with the best pharmacy experience possible. Any information we gather will always remain confidential and never be shared with anyone for any reason.
